Do not believe the bad reviews on this device. I chose one and can not be satisfied with him. I have a device to the quad-core PC with 3GB RAM running Windows7. Hauppauge works fine with my PC. I have software to Dolby Digital 5.1 audio and HD video in 1080i 1920x1080/30fps/13mbps (scan-max available on the device), and data sets without any problems. I bought this unit I could get rid of First and foremost, the programs from the TiVo HD and store them permanently on the hard disk. The unit is beautiful and Blu-ray to do DVD-compatible data looks different to how the original video and watch them on 60 "Pioneer Kuro (TV, known for its excellent image quality, but also bring any errors in the signal source, if available.) Point looks amazing even with TV, video, as good as the original. When people complain about the device, or an older version (make sure the latest "E1" version, if you have a Hauppauge within 30 days and want to get in touch to ask to replace them), the body can not connect properly, or the computer is not enough horses with the 1212th day is a unique product, very nice addition to my home theater (replacing the old 480i Sony DVD Recorder).

Disapointing

I heard a lot of good things about this device and I bought it to record PS3 MW2 matches. I always get nukes so I wanted to show them.The first day it came I was very excited but it was terrible.The quility was black and white and very blurry. I got a few nukes and couldnt record. Amazon have always been good but this is discraseful.I paid a lot. Be careful ordering devices from other countries. VERY BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recordings look great, but software is tough to use

I bought this machine to unload HD programs off my DTVpal DVR. I have a relatively simple set up, and nothing fancy with audio at all. I use an HP laptop, 6930 to record the program. I play the DVR program and while the program plays, I record onto the computer via the Hauppauge. I was unable to figure out if I had enough video memory, but I believe the spin rate of my hard drive is 7200 rpm. I was concerned that it'd be glitchy, but it seems to work fine. The editting to get the program onto a regular DVD is the hard part and incredibly time consuming (at least it was for me). There is a cutting room, where you can cut out things like commercials, but you have to go down to some fractions of seconds to cut. This is painful because at this point there is a lot of zooming in and zooming out. Setting up chapters is also tough because the time codes for chapters don't appear to match those of the cutting room time codes. I have not looked into other software to edit. I also haven't figured out if there is a way to lower the resolution (and disk space) after recording (on the laptop) at a high bit rate (which presumably means higher resolution). I ran into problems where the program was just too long to fit onto a regular DVD and I had to split the program onto 2 DVDs.

Great product, as long as you know what you are getting...

I needed to start making my online videos in HD. My camera is a Sony HD Handycam, so I was set from that end, but I still required a means of recording my video game footage. I didn't want to use a PCI recording card because my computer is a bit old and it would soak up too many of my CPU clock cycles (plus they are way too expensive for me). So that is what landed me at the Hauppauge HD-PVR.

This PVR is primarily intended, like most PVRs and DVRs, to act as a pass-through and recording device for HD television. I no long watch television, so I cannot review this item for that purpose. I am using it to record footage from current generation game consoles, and for that purpose, it is a fine product, and I am happy with my purchase.

The Hauppauge HD-PVR does not have any hard drive storage or data retaining elements. It's only purpose is to take component video and audio signal, convert it to an HD video file on-the-fly (maximum resolution is 1080i), and store it on your computer via USB 2.0 cable. The PVR comes with ArcSoft software to preview the video on your computer screen and from there you click a button to start and stop recording to a computer file.

Here is what you really need to know before buying:

1. You can only save to AVCHD format. It is a notoriously compact compression format, but also difficult to decode. Not all media players are compatible. Thankfully, ArcSoft included in the software suite a player that will accept these.

2. It is unclear what file extension you are saving to without some research. Your choices are PLAYSTATION 3, AVCHD, and XBOX 360 (respectively the extensions are .M2TS, .TS, and .MP4). I thought it was rather unprofessional to name the presets like this, but I understand it is trying to be user friendly and say what video game console will play the extension.

3. Files are automatically named with a time stamp. Every piece of recording software I've ever used would let you name the file either before or after recording. With this PVR, if you want to easily keep track of you files, you have to rename them in a Windows file view. Probably not a big deal, but I can easily have 50 files per project. Renaming is tedious.

4. Recordings are low-bit rate HD. The range of bit rates is from 6 Mbit to 13.5 Mbit. So while it is an HD resolution, the files are not as clear as HDV .mpeg files, which I believe are around 25 Mbit.

5. The recorder will automatically choose the resolution to record at. You cannot up or down scale. So, sorry, it will only record the Wii at 720x480. Although, some might find this feature convenient.

The ArcSoft software suite comes with a recorder, player, converter, and petite DVD authoring package. I only really use the first two, but I hear people are gung-ho for the DVD authoring because you can make a Blu-ray HD disk with regular DVD-Rs.

Anyway, I use Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 to edit my videos, and it thankfully accepts AVCHD files. But, if you plan to edit with this files, you NEED a fast computer. Quad Core preferably.
