A Little Competition Goes a Long Way
Rivalry exists in all areas of life, whether it be Duke vs UNC, Burger King vs McDonald's, or Facebook vs MySpace. The gaming world is no exception and a rivalry that existed since 2001 with the release of the XBOX has practically divided the world into Sony or Microsoft loyalists. But if we can all get past the hatred we have for the other company and its fanboys, we can see that competition is healthy and it inspires companies to new explore levels of technology out of fear, if anything else.
This idea of good competition became especially apparent to me after digesting the information released during E3 a few weeks ago. I was really impressed from videos of Microsoft's Project Natal, where a controller is no longer necessary as long as you mimic the actions efficiently with your hands. This is a new level of interactive gameplay that will fully immerse the player and add new depth to the game, especially with fighting games that force the player to dodge kicks and punches and counter attack. Racing games just require the player to hold out their hands as if holding a steering wheel and pit stops are successful by mimicing the use of tools. Some players may prefer the feel of something in their hand, like a controller or steering wheel, so it will be interesting to see how Microsoft deals with that issue. Project Natal won't be around until 2011, so I was wondering why would it come out on the XBOX360 and not the next installment in the Microsoft console lineup.
Not to be outdone at the biggest gaming conference of the year, Sony gave PS3 fans a taste of a new controller that has the look of a microphone that displays on a one to one ratio. The demonstration showed the player holding a variety of simulated items, like a sword, a whip, and a tennis racket that he could move on the screen as naturally as true extension of his arm. What was most impressive was the last demo, the bow and arrow, where the player steadies his arm that holds the controller like a bow, reaching behind his back to grab an arrow, setting the arrow in place and firing it into an oncoming enemy.
Who knows if these two new projects would have been introduced to us this 2009 E3 had the gaming industry been dominated by one company. Here's a little economics lesson to take away from this: monopolies naturally sell their prices higher than they would in a perfectly competitive market, so if Sony were the only company with a gaming console, they could charge however much they wanted ($600) for their system and go as slow as they wanted in the R&D field. Thankfully, that isn't the case and the market share between Microsoft and Sony is pretty close (I am leaving Nintendo and the Wii out of this discussion in case you haven't noticed, mainly because they are a special case) and so anything one company does to advance it's system and level of gameplay, the other must follow suit or lose co
